There were so many cool events in Shreveport Bossier in 2017 and it was tough to make sure we got to all of the big ones. But these are the stories about things that made us happy in 2017.

12. Geek'd Con

Thousands of people flocked to the Shreveport Convention Center for Geek'd Con. This event keeps getting bigger each year and we can only hope 2018 will be spectacular. It was kinda cool to hang out with the Incredible Hulk, Lou Ferrigno.

11. Local Sports Guys Make Us Proud

Tre'Davious White drafted by the Buffalo Bills and the Green Oaks grad has made his mark already. Brandon Wilson from Calvary is with the Cincinnati Bengals and he's hoping to keep his spot on the roster. Trent Taylor from Evangel is working to earn his spot on the 49ers starting lineup. Also 2017 was the year Haughton's Dak Prescott won the NFL rookie of the year award.

10. Shreveport Council Votes to Change Blue Laws Restrictions on Alcohol Sales

After being discussed, revised and updated numerous times, the Shreveport City Council votes to ease many of the restrictions on alcohol sales on Sundays.

9. Air Force Secretary Comes to Town

Dr. Heather Wilson stopped in town to visit Barksdale and participate in a Symposium connected to Global Strike Command. She talked with us about the future of Barksdale and the importance of the local base.

8. Gas Tax Fails

State Transportation Secretary Dr. Shawn Wilson talks with us about the failure of any increase in the gas tax. He says it will be tough to address all the highway needs in the state, but he will work with the money that is available.

7. Dog Park Opens

After years of delays, and legal fights, Shreveporters finally got to witness the opening of our city's first dog park. It's quite a beautiful complex along the Clyde Fant Parkway at Stoner and it draws pups and their owners from across the city.

6. Youree and Kings Opens

The $8.5 million overhaul of the intersection of Youree Drive and East Kings Highway is complete. It is wider with more turning lands in all directions. The improvements really do help with the flow of traffic in that area. Improvements have also been made at Shreveport Barksdale and East Kings.

5. Aquarium Opens

There were a few delays, but the Shreveport Aquarium is now open to guests. Students from across the region have been bused in to view the aquatic life. The Aquarium management team still has some hurdles to tackle, but we are happy to see something new for families in our region. We hope it is a huge success.

4. Eclipse

Those special glasses we used to view the eclipse were a hot commodity back in August when we got a chance to view the eclipse. One of the busiest spots was the Broadmoor Library where dozens of people showed up to get a glimpse of this astronomical wonder.

3. Walk On's Independence Bowl

We got some really good news near the end of the year when Walk On's signed on as the title sponsor of the Independence Bowl. This is a big deal and Walk On's is the kind of sponsor you love. They have been working hard to promote the game and get more people to attend this years matchup on December 27th.

2. Uber and Lyft

These 2 ride sharing companies have been working on a deal to come to Shreveport to operate. Sadly, Uber and the city have not reached an agreement, but Lyft has and that company is now up and running in our community. We hope 2018 will be the year we also get Uber.

1. Paul McCartney Concert Was Huge

This was the biggest show in our market in 2017. It was an early sellout and captured all the talk of our community during the week of the show. McCartney played for a solid 3 hours and simply wowed the crowd. He also told the audience he'll be back. We hope so.
