A Pop Icon Laid to Rest: A Look Back at Whitney Houston[Videos]
Pop superstar Whitney Houston was laid to rest yesterday after a service at her childhood church where she first began singing as a young girl in the church choir and as a soloist. There were many famous guests by invitation only who paid their respects to the fallen star at her funeral at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, N.J.
In fact, Kevin Costner, who starred with Houston in the hit movie, "The Body Guard," was one of the speakers who eulogized her. Costner and Houston had great chemistry in the movie, which was a love story between a famous singer and her bodyguard.
That movie spawned the number one hit for Whitney, "I Will Always Love You" that was written by Dolly Parton, but became a number one hit and the sound track to "The Bodyguard" sold millions of records for Houston.
Houston's godmother Aretha Franklin was supposed to be there to pay tribute and perform in honor of Houston, but couldn't because of physical reasons.
Houston's cousin Dionne Warwick was part of the eulogy remembering Whitney and celebrating the star's amazing music career that spanned a couple of decades. She was the emcee for the service.
Others attending and performing included Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys.
Houston was THE hit maker in the 80s and 90s. And, was gifted with "The Voice" that no one could touch during her prime.
Houston's death is still being investigated, as authorities are awaiting toxicology reports. It's generally believed that Houston died after mixing alcohol with prescription drugs like Xanax.
Houston had been in rehab several different times. Her drug use seemed to spiral out of control during the time she was married to R&B rapper Bobby Brown.
They had a daughter together, 18-year-old Bobbi Kristina. Brown, who was in the middle of touring with his new band, "New Edition," was present at the funeral home, but reported left early in a dispute over seating arrangements.
