A sweet treat left a bitter taste in the mouths of some hungry tourists.

Four British people on vacation in Rome were recently stunned when they were charged a mind-boggling $84 for four ice cream cones. You'll get brain freeze trying to figure out the math so we'll do it for you – that’s $21 per cone.

The tourists were so incensed they went public with the story, which made it all the way to the desk of Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno. He responded to the scandal by offering the ripped-off quarter a free trip back to the Italian city, not to mention a complimentary ice cream.

Despite the enticing deal, it’s not clear if the tourists plan to return.

And while several people have sided with the customers, there's a camp that feels no pity. One employee at the ice cream shop said,  "The prices are clearly on display."
