It might seem a little futuristic, but Amazon is nearly ready to release drones to begin delivery packages.

Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos introduced Prime Air, a futuristic delivery system that he hopes to use to get packages to customers in less than an hour. He unveiled a video of the Prime Air drone during a "60 Minutes" report on CBS.

So how does it work? The item is placed into a plastic yellow Amazon container and picked up at the end of a conveyor belt by an Amazon drone, which takes off and soars to its destination using GPS. When will this little gadget be ready for deployment?

"Putting Prime Air into commercial use will take some number of years as we advance the technology and wait for the necessary FAA rules and regulations," said Bezos.

The Prime Air drones would be used to deliver packages weighing five pounds or less.
