Music can have a profound effect on all of us. It triggers memories, elevates our mood, makes us angry and helps us learn. It can also bring us out from the dark shell of a weakened and aging mind. That’s certainly the effect music has had for this man who suffers from dementia brought on by age.
After finding herself in the bottom three last week, Skylar Laine had to prove she deserved to survive another week on ‘American Idol.’ And, as she put it, she “put on a pretty ol’ dress” and showed us something we hadn’t seen yet with an unbelievable performance of ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ from the movie ‘Beaches.’
It’s pretty hard to own the ‘American Idol’ stage when there’s a delay in the start of your song due to technical difficulties. Hollie Cavanagh can attest to that, after the start of her performance of ‘What a Feeling’ (from the movie ‘Flashdance’) was delayed because the crew was having trouble getting power to the keyboard.
Tonight on ‘American Idol,’ Phillip Phillips lived out a dream and performed on the stage with his brother, who Phillips acknowledged on the show, has “taught me so much about music.” The two blended folk and electric guitar to straight up nail Genesis’ ‘That’s All’ like nobody’s business.
Somewhere along the way, an egg-toting, gift-giving rabbit became associated with the Easter holiday. We assume that soon after, sadistic parents decided that it would be fun to make sure any likeness of this generous rabbit should be creepy and frightening so they can take pictures and video of their children being completely freaked out.
Not many of us escaped lottery fever last week as the Mega Millions jackpot skyrocketed to about $640 million. Everyone wanted to get in on the action and we know one firefighter who is very happy his fellow firefighters decided to try their luck.
When we were kids, not only did we have to walk uphill to and from school, our field trips were to boring places like museums, weird historical reenactments and planetariums. Kids these days have all the fun, especially when they get to spend the afternoon at Boston’s favorite adult video store.
Traditionally, the first day of April is a perfect time to get your kicks by playing jokes and setting up pranks for your friends, family and coworkers. Some people like to prepare for this day by pulling pranks all year long for practice. Thank goodness we now have YouTube so jokesters can record these pranks and the reactions they cause and then post them for our enjoyment.
Every year since 2000, except 2001 and 2003, Google has treated netizens to at least one, sometimes 17, April Fool’s Day pranks and easter eggs. And, since we know they love to play (check out their new Google Play offering), we’re hoping 2012 will be no different.
It makes sense that the masses should decide who has had an influence over them. Perhaps this is the theory behind TIME Magazine’s recent release of its 200-name ballot for its yearly list of the world’s 100 most influential people. A list that includes a variety of well-known people, with both positive and negative personas.
