Here comes summer!

That’s right, the un-official start of summer is upon us as we cruise into Memorial Day weekend.

Before we get too excited about a three day weekend, let’s not forget to take some time to recognize the Holiday itself and to observe the men and women who have given their lives in the armed services.

Now, onto my top five things to do this Memorial Day around Shreveport-Bossier!

#5 Shreveport Captains

Play Ball! America’s favorite pastime has a home in the Ark-La-Tex! After a couple of away games, the Shreveport Bossier Captains are back at home on Monday. What a great night of family fun at the ballpark as the Captains take on the El Paso Diablos at 7pm.

#4 Hit The Pools

Life’s A Beach! Memorial Day is traditionally the time when the slides and pools re-open for the season. And with our weather, the kids love a little splash time! The SPAR pools don’t open until Tuesday the 31st… But Splash Kingdom Watertown opens up on Saturday the 28th.  Pick your pleasure: Water slides, the wave pool, or just relax in the lazy river.

#3 Summer Cookouts

Light The Grill! Everyone enjoys a good backyard cookout. No matter if you prefer steaks, hamburgers, or hotdogs, they all taste better off the grill. Plus, being surrounded by family and friends is a great way to unwind over the weekend.

#2 Watch The Indy 500

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! Being from Indiana, you knew I was going to include watching the Indianapolis 500, right? After all, my mother-in-law lives only three blocks from the Speedway! The greatest spectacle in racing celebrates its 100th birthday this year. Out of a lineup of 33 drivers, only one can finish in first place and take that swig of milk!

#1 Mudbug Madness

Pinching Tails and Sucking Heads! You know what I’m talking about… Mudbug Madness! It all happens downtown in Festival Plaza. What began as a simple crawfish boil back in 1984 has grown into a huge festival full of music, food, and fun! It’s now big enough to be listed in the “Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events” list. No matter if you like Cajun, zydeco, blues, or jazz music, it’s got all the bases covered. The fun kicks off with the opening ceremonies Thursday night at 7:15.

And, it’s not in Shreveport-Bossier proper, but my next door neighbor said she always heads down to Natchitoches for the Fleur de Lis Memorial Day weekend craft show. On Saturday, there will be over 100 booths set up with jewelry, stained glass, art, candy, and more for your shopping pleasure.

No matter what you and the family do this weekend, stay safe, and thanks for taking KVKI along with ya!
