Caddo Magnet High School JROTC Headed for D.C.

After advancing through two phases of competition, Shreveport’s Caddo Parish Magnet High School Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) academic team will compete in the final Championship round of the 2012 Army JROTC Academic Bowl Championship in Washington D.C., on the campus of George Mason University, June 22-26, 2012. This event is sponsored by the Army JROTC and conducted by College Options Foundation. The leadership team and academic team already competed and won the parish wide events in the spring and fall.

Even though the cadets won't be leaving Shreveport until June 21st, they have already begun assignments that must be completed and fowarded to the College Options Foundation for scoring.

In the past the Caddo Magnet teams have finished twice in the top five in the nation. To prepare for the competition the teams practice weekly in preparing for the different events.  All grading is done on computer based systems and includes online competitions.

The Caddo Magnet JROTC teams will practice throughout the month of June and depart Shreveport on 21 June for Washington D.C.  Their trip will include a visit of the U.S. Capitol, the Smithsonian, Arlington National Cemetery and Mount Vernon.

Caddo Parish Magnet High School is also one of only five schools to field a team in the championship of the national Leadership Symposium in addition to the Academic Bowl.

During two rounds of competitive online play, Caddo Parish’s Army JROTC team earned top scores out of the 1,583 teams that competed from around the world to win a place in the National Academic Bowl competition and the all expense paid trip to the nation’s capital. In these two fast-paced rounds students were tested on their knowledge using SAT/ACT-type questions in the areas of JROTC curriculum, English, Math and Science. One of the main goals of the JROTC Academic Bowl is to prepare students for state exit/graduation exams as well as college entrance exams, such as the SAT and ACT. The team is one of only 24 Army JROTC teams in the nation to advance to the finals.

During two rounds of competitive online play in the Leadership Symposium competition, Caddo Parish’s Army JROTC team earned top scores out of the 1,345 teams that competed from across the world to win a place in the National Leadership Symposium as well. In the Leadership Symposium competition cadets were tested on their knowledge of leadership values and skills including leadership tenets from Gen. George C. Marshall. The Caddo  Magnet High School Leadership Symposium team is one of only 40 Leadership teams in the nation to advance to the finals.

The winner of the Army JROTC Academic Championship will go on to compete against the winners of the Air Force JROTC and Navy JROTC Academic Bowls in the newly established JROTC Tri-Service Academic Bowl Championship.

The JROTC Leadership Symposium and Academic Bowl (JLAB) is a nationally recognized academic competition created exclusively for JROTC students. By participating, cadets learn the values of citizenship, academic competition, and college opportunity. The competition creates tremendous opportunities for JROTC cadets by allowing them to demonstrate leadership and academic abilities.
