Parents will soon be learning about a new nap time policy in Caddo Schools.

Caddo parish teachers and parents have been concerned lately that nap time for kindergartners will be eliminated this school year. Caddo Schools Chief Academic Officer Keith Burton tells KEEL News that naps will be decided school by school, teacher by teacher.

Burton says: "We're gonna do what's needed. If a teacher has a student in her classroom that need to nap, those students will still have that opportunity to have that nap. The other students won't be required to lay down and be still for 30 or 45 minutes when their body is not needing that."

Burton says there's been a lot of discussion among concerned parents and teachers, but that they shouldn't be worried. the policy will be outlined during upcoming back to school nights.

"Parents need to know this in a timely manner. That's why we'll have it communicated to all of them when they return this week. We will make sure they get the word out to their PTA's and parent groups so parents can rest assured that they have all the information needed."

Burton says to goal is to do what is in the best interest of each child.

"If you have a kindergarten classroom made up of 20 students, you're probably going to have 5, 6 or 7 of them sleeping and the rest will be engaged in quiet activities."
