The Caddo Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for its children's summer camps and programs.

The Youth Firearms Education Camp will be held June 15-19 at the Sheriff's Regional Training Academy. It's for boys and girls ages 10-13, and teaches firearms safety and .22 rifle target shooting. Campers will also learn rural and urban survival skills, water safety and hands-on defensive techniques to protect against abduction by strangers.

Each session begins at 8AM and ends at 5PM. Camps are free and transportation is available, if needed. You can get an application on the Caddo Sheriff's website or pick one up at any sheriff's office substation, Caddo Correctional Center or Sheriff's Safety Town. You'll need to mail applications to the Training Academy at 15639 Highway One South, Shreveport, 71115.

Two sessions of CSI Camp will also be held for children ages 11 and 12. Dates are June 23-25 and July 7-9, from 8AM to 3PM each day.

Participants will learn how to detect clues and apply CSI techniques at a mock crime scene. They'll collect evicence, take crime scene photos and learn to lift and analyze fingerprints. At the end of the camp, they'll analyze clues and solve a crime.

CSI Camps will be held at Sheriff's Safety Town. Call Community Programs to register at 681-0875.

One-day programs will be held at Sheriff's Safety Town from June 2 through August 7, specifically for groups of six to 20 children. They'll learn the basics of personal safety, plus bicycle, motor vehicle, fire, internet, animal and gun safety, and stranger danger. Camp times are 9-11AM or 1-3PM.

Children need to bring their own lunch and dress for outdoor weather. Make sure they're wearing closed-toe shoes. There's no charge for the one-day programs, but pre-registration is required. You can call Community Programs for that, as well.
