A Caddo Sheriff's Office K-9 has died from a medical condition.

k9 1Sheriff Steve Prator says Victor was a Belgian Malinois purchased by the department in 2007. He was a dual-purpose dog trained in patrol work and narcotics detection. His only handler was Corporal Marcus Green.

Victor was over 10 years old and began showing signs of illness last week. He was taken to North Shreveport Animal Hospital, where he was diagnosed as being in the early stages of kidney and liver failure. He also had an enlarged heart. He passed away at the animal hospital this morning.

"Victor was a great asse to our K-9 Unit and provided a valuable service to the citizens of Caddo Parish," Prator said in a CSO news release. "He will certainly be missed."

Plans are underway to lay Victor to rest at the sheriff's office K-9 rest cemetery, located at the Sheriff's Regional Training Academy.
