Disney’s ‘Lion King’ Remake Taps Veteran Screenwriter Jeff Nathanson

With the news that Jon Favreau was directing a live-action remake of arguably THE most popular Disney movie of all time, The Lion King, people were undoubtedly excited. Favreau successfully launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 2008’s Iron Man, believed by many to still be the best Avengers movie, and has had a few notable successes since, including Chef in 2014 and this summer’s almost-entirely-CGI remake of The Jungle Book. The latter did so well that Disney hired Favreau again to direct The Lion King, and today it was announced that the film has found a screenwriter.

A Brief History of Scary Movie Clowns

For hundreds of years, we lived in a world where clowns were popularly understood to be funny and whimsical ... or, at the least, not absolutely freaking terrifying. Pop stars sang songs like “Everybody Loves a Clown” and “Send in the Clowns.” Parents hired entertainers in colorful satin outfits to do magic tricks and make balloon animals at their children’s birthday parties. Ronald McDonald sold us hamburgers. Emmett Kelly and Red Skelton were TV staples. We had a tacit cultural agreement not just to tolerate clowns, but to look forward to having them around.

‘Suicide Squad’ Pulls a ‘Pottermore,’ Launches Viral Marketing Website

Viral marketing is a pretty hit or miss business. Hollywood’s current king of viral campaigns, Ridley Scott, has lured audiences to his films by putting out video campaigns before his movies — before Prometheus, he released a few “ads” for Michael Fassbender’s David android, and ahead of The Martian’s premiere last year Scott’s team created a YouTube channel full of video diaries from the crew of the Ares III. Viral campaigns are designed to tease out interest in their films by providing the future audience with little bits and pieces of what they’ll see when they make it to the theater. The latest campaign, strangely enough, comes from Suicide Squad, which launched an odd little website today designed to let fans of the film click around “classified” documents and hunt for clues about the DC cinematic universe.
