New ‘The LEGO Ninjago Movie’ Images Show the Family That Ninjas Together, Stays Together

With The LEGO Batman Movie the latest LEGO adventure to be hailed by critics — our own review called it “far more entertaining than a giant piece of crass commercialism has any right to be”  —  it looks like the LEGO universe is here to stay. In fact, that crass commercialism might be part of the fun; while plenty of Marvel fans spend their time wondering what would happen if the studio obtained the rights to some of their lost properties, the LEGO films are free to move forward with reckless abandon, secure in their strange collection of legal permissions.

‘Zootopia’ Wins Best Animated Feature at 2017 Annie Awards

With Oscar season just around the corner, now is the time for all the smaller award shows to announce their big annual winners. Earlier this weekend, we saw the Directors Guild of America give their biggest honors to movies and television shows such as La La Land, Game of Thrones, Veep, and O.J.: Made in America. And now it’s time for the animation industry to share their selections for the best animated films and television shows of 2016.

DGA Awards Honor ‘La La Land’ and ‘Game of Thrones’ Directors

When it comes to predicting future Oscar winners, few institutions are as prescient as the Directors Guild of America. Only once in the past decade has the DGA honored a filmmaker who did not go on to win the Academy Award for Best Director; that took place in 2012, when the DGA selected Ben Affleck for Argo while the AMPAS went with Ang Lee and Life of Pi. If the DGA selects you as the best director of the previous year, you might as well start working on that Oscar acceptance speech.

‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ Review: Finally, A Batman Who Does Play Around

It’s a question that has perplexed Batman villains since at least 1989: “Where does he get those wonderful toys?” Finally, we have an answer. The LEGO Store. The one a few blocks from Warner Bros.’ New York offices currently sells at least eight different LEGO Batman sets, all of which appear in various forms in The LEGO Batman Movie. The film is, like The LEGO Movie before it, a feature-length toy commercial — and, like The LEGO Movie before it, The LEGO Batman Movie is far more entertaining than a giant piece of crass commercialism has any right to be.

‘The LEGO Movie’ Sequel Lands ‘Trolls’ Director Mike Mitchell

Way, way back in February 2015, Warner Bros. hired Community vet Rob Schrab to direct The LEGO Movie sequel — a pick fully endorsed by filmmaking Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are a teensy bit busy working on a certain Star Wars movie, and thus unable to helm the follow-up to their animated blockbuster. Almost two years later (and several months since we last heard anything about the sequel), there’s apparently been a creative shakeup, as Schrab has reportedly left the project and been replaced by the director of Trolls.

Discover the Creepy New Poster and Super Bowl Teaser for ‘Life’

Here’s something I’ve never been able to fully understand about myself: I find haunted house movies terribly boring and haunted space station movies absolutely terrifying. Take your typical spooky movie  —  with old buildings, dark hallways, and moving shadows  —  and I could fall asleep right there in the theater. But kick that spooky movie up into space and give the characters some space suits? As far as I’m concerned, that makes anything an instant classic — and I’ve got the Event Horizon ticket stubs to prove it.

John Lithgow Cast in ‘Pitch Perfect 3,’ Probably Not as One of the Bellas

Pitch Perfect 2 wasn’t as hilarious and fun as its predecessor, but it was good enough to warrant another sequel. Pitch Perfect 3 will hit theaters this December, and as such is gathering a few additions to its cast. While the main Barden Bellas are returning, as well as Elizabeth Banks, there’s plenty of room for some new faces, and today john Lithgow has officially joined the cast.

Kristen Stewart Is Haunted in the New ‘Personal Shopper’ Trailer

The latest Kristen Stewart project to finally hit our shores is Personal Shopper, a kind of ghost story that made waves at Cannes and the Toronto Film Festival last year. Stewart and director Olivier Assayas previously collaborated on 2015’s fantastic Clouds of Sils Maria, and their second project together has been pretty divisive, but Stewart made our Best of TIFF list for completely carrying this movie all on her own. A new trailer heralds the film’s US release, which opens next month.

American Humane Disproves ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ Animal Abuse Video

With everyone’s feeds full of horrible news stories these days, you’ve probably already forgotten about the video of alleged animal abuse on the set of A Dog’s Purpose. Back in January, TMZ shared leaked footage of animal handlers aggressively dragging their canine star into a tank of water. The clear signs of the dog’s panic caused an internet firestorm, with star Josh Gad distancing himself from the project and PETA calling for an immediate boycott of the film. A Dog’s Purpose still performed well enough in its opening weekend, but the scandal no doubt cost it ticket sales at the box office.

Gerard Butler Joins Directorial Debut of ‘John Wick’ Stunt Coordinator

Few actors in life have embraced their status as a walking, talking action figure quite like Gerard Butler. Once in the running to play James Bond  —  he had apparently been considered for Daniel Craig’s role in Casino Royale  —  Butler seems to have abandoned his ambitious side in recent years, content to grin his way through violent action movies about Egyptian demigods and jingoistic secret service agents. For a while there, it looked as though Butler might have given up on anything . And then Snow Ponies came along.
