What Are the Deadliest Jobs in America?

For the majority of us, paper cuts, caffeine jitters and the occasional post-lunch stomach trauma comprise the extent of our work-related hazards—none particularly serious and certainly not life-threatening. But every day some Americans go to work and literally risk their lives for a paycheck.

Put That Burger Down — It’s Destroying the Ozone Layer

Eating a charbroiled burger is better for your heart, but according to new research from the University of California Riverside, that charbroiled goodness comes at the expense of the ozone layer—big time.

Researchers say that is because commercial charbroilers and countertop grills produce more than double the grease, smoke, heat, water vapor and combustion products than even a diesel truck does.

What States in America Use the Most Energy?

Americans use a lot of energy. A LOT. In fact, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the United States burned up a whopping 98 quadrillion BTUs of energy in 2010, up from 95 quadrillion a year prior—a mind-boggling amount of energy consumption for a country that only makes up about 4.5 percent of the global population. Worldwide BTU usage is approximately 500 quadrillion, so that means that nearly a fifth of the world’s energy is being consumed by the United States.

What Are the Most Educated Countries in the World?

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released its Education at a Glance 2012 report, and two of its conclusions jumped out at us: 1) countries that spend more on education tend to have more highly educated populations, and 2) the more educated you are, the more likely you are to be employed.

While that may not sound too surprising, it’s an important reminder of just how valuable education is in the current globalized economy—especially following a calamity like the 2008 financial collapse and subsequent recession that America is still ever-so-slowly recovering from.

Taken as a whole, the report is a good indicator of which countries are the most educated, and, helpfully, the OECD showed us how they made those determinations.

There is something to be said for a young man who, in an attempt to sweep his newfound lady friend off her feet, takes her out for a romantic meal at a nice restaurant, gazes deeply into her eyes, and ... asks if she'd mind picking up half the check.
