Centenary College In Shreveport Has Been Placed On Probation

According to insidehighered.com, Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport has been put on probation by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The report says that Centenary was one of 5 schools to be placed on probation during a meeting last week. The school will be on probation for at least 12 months. There were various reasons given in the report for the probationary measures.

The reasons given include a mixture of reduction in faculty, the schools move away from NCAA Division 1 athletics, along with a 29% hike in tuition and expenses.

Since some of these moves have been laid out, back in 2013, there have been people across the Shreveport area questioning the moves of the school. Though the institution is a private university, there is some impact on the local economy, and morale. Some in the local community have called for the school to open up their admissions to allow more students, which would generate more revenue, while others pointed to the drop of Division 1 sports as a failure to make an attempt to turn things around.

No matter what the local population says, the university will continue to make their decisions internally, which may or may not have anything to do with some recent changes in leadership.

It's going to be interesting to see if this probationary status leads to any changes with the structure of Centenary. Shreveport needs more good news.
