You’d be forgiven to shrug off the Twin Peaks revival ending as pure David Lynch, but any hope the actors have better insight is fading fast. As series star David Duchovny admits of the trippy twist, “of course people are going to be like, ‘What the f–k?!’”

Lest you forget, the September Twin Peaks finale ended on a double-dip of insanity, as Kyle MacLachlan’s Cooper and Sheryl Lee’s not-quite-Laura Palmer seemingly arrived at an alternate reality in which Laura never lived in her old home. Cooper began to wonder if somehow they’d been deposited in a different year, before a rush of memories frightened Lee’s “Carrie Page” into that classic scream.

Duchovny only ended up returning for a single scene as his character Denise Bryson, but – as TVLine reports – access to David Lynch didn’t offer any additional insight on where the revival was headed:

[David Lynch] is not trying to give you what you want. He’s trying to give you what you need … He’s just working on a different level. [TV] is not a medium with a lot of great artists, so of course people are going to be like, ‘What the f–k?!’ When people look at Picasso they don’t come out and go, ‘That made me feel fantastic. I got all my questions answered.’

Duchovny nonetheless enjoyed the finale, adding of Lynch “He’s a completely in-control, idiosyncratic artist. And he happens to make television shows.” The actor’s response also rings notably close to that of Kyle MacLachlan himself, who told The Hollywood Reporter in September:

Well, good art asks questions, you know? It doesn’t always provide answers. I think that’s what we’re experiencing right now. (Laughs.) It’s not always the most comfortable or the most satisfying feeling. It’s also asking us to consider what we’ve just seen. That’s how I’m looking at it.

We may never know what became of Coop (at least for another twenty-five years), so here’s hoping Twin Peaks Season 4 eventually offers a few answers. Or, at least replaces them with all-new questions.
