‘Logan’ Producer Simon Kinberg Clarifies Timeline for Future X-Men Movies

Keeping the series of films featuring or tangentially related to the X-Men straight has become a task on par with reading Bleak House. The original three films from the 2000s were their own thing, at first independent of the rebooted X-Men: First Class set in the past. But they were then woven into the “present” with Days of Future Past and Apocalypse, which happen to be set in both timelines and physical dimensions. All this operates separately from Logan and Wolverine’s other solo films, and while Deadpool technically is set in the main universe, it can’t really bring in any of the major pre-existing characters due to intellectual property complications, so it might as well be an isolated entity as well. It’s a lot to keep track of, to put it mildly.

Simon Kinberg, producer of Logan and co-writer of Days of Future Past and Apocalypse, recently sat down for an interview with Deadline in which he clarified a bit of the X-Universe’s future. When asked what comes next he offered:

Deadpool 2 is going into production this year. Then X-Force, which is a combination of Deadpool and Cable –they’re like the Black ops of the X-Men. They’re much darker and have an R-rated decibel. There are other X-Men characters coming into X-Force at different times in the comic, but it’s separate from X-Men.

While it’s been all but public knowledge that Deadpool’s frequent mercenary partner Cable (who has a glowing eye and robot arm, so get psyched) would soon get in the movie game, it’s good to have hard confirmation for his future. Either way, it should be a while until we actually get a look at him. We know he'll make his big-screen debut in Deadpool 2 with Stranger Things star David Harbour rumored in the role. That won’t hit theaters until 2018. But hey, at least it’s happening!
