Demi Lovato poses as a sultry blonde in a plunging white jacket on the cover of Cosmopolitan for Latinas’ summer issue.

The pop singer, who recently traded in her wavy blonde locks for an edgier look, used her time with Cosmo as an opportunity to speak about some of her well-publicized personal issues.

“I was used to drinking and doing drugs on my birthday,” shared Lovato. “I always imagined my 21st being a huge party where I’d get s--t-faced and go crazy. But I realized that there’s so much more to life than that. Imagine walking 10 miles a day just to get water for your family? We have so much to be grateful for.”

The ‘Neon Lights’ singer is referring to her 21st birthday, celebrated last August in Kenya with the Free the Children charity. She has certainly come a long way from her days of partying and drug abuse.

A good thing, too — Lovato acknowledged she’s seen as a role model for her young fans, her own sister included. “When I was younger,” she said on the topic, “I needed someone in the spotlight to idolize, who stood for positivity and light and happiness, and wanted to change the world. And because I didn’t have that, I realized, I want to do that, if only for my 12-year-old little sister.”

Lovato just wrapped up the U.S. dates of her Neon Lights tour, promoting her fourth studio album, ‘Demi.’ Now in South America for the second leg, the pop star is still working diligently on maintaining her healthy and positive attitude, not just for her fans but also for herself.

When asked about her bi-polar disorder, Lovato admitted, “It’s a daily thing. I treat it with medication. Not everybody does that, but for me it works. That’s what works for me — medicating, checking in with people, being honest, and being grateful for things.”

Lovatics, show your idol some love on the rest of her tour. She certainly deserves it!
