David and Cyndi Wood of Athens purchased a 2,600 sq. ft. home on 25 acres just south of Athens on FM 2494 as their dream home. However, circumstances changed and they now have different plans for the home: They are making it the prize in an essay contest. In addition to paying an entry fee of $50, you could win the home in September be writing a 300 word essay on one of two topics proposed by the couple. As a veteran of the U.S. Navy, David had plans to retire in the home with his wife, however, his wife Cyndi tells the Athens Daily Review,

Due to health issues, we are no longer physically able to work and clear the property as we had originally planned."

Despite the family's fondness of the property, they need to live closer to a U.S. Veteran's medical facility for David's future medical care. This special need has inspired them to seek an alternative way to sell it."

Topics for the essay contest are:

  • If you could restore one broken relationship, which would it be an why?
  • What is the biggest problem in America and how would you fix it, if you could?

By answering one of those questions in a 300 word essay and submitting an entry fee of just $50, you could win the Henderson county property. Entries will by due by August 31st and will be judged by a selected panel and based on a list of criteria set by the family.

Cyndi tells the Athens Daily Review,

Even if they [the winner] don’t want to live in the area or move here, they could list it with a realtor for at least $200,000. They will come out with about $170,000, after realtor fees and closing costs. Any upcoming income or property taxes, will be the responsibility of the winner. When someone wins the house, they will get the warranty deed, presently free of encumbrances."
