Shreveport has some very unique and special things of which  we should be proud. We are home to the very first Shriners' Hospital for Children, anywhere in the USA. This year they are celebrating 90 years. What is amazing, the Shriners do so much work behind the scenes that we don't hear about. The stories are as unique as the people they help. Each of those stories center around a child from birth to 18 years old...and they don't charge the families for the services.

You have seen them in parades, rain or shine. They don't do it because it is just fun, they do it because they care about children.

To be honest, I truly believe in the mission of the Shriners, as my son was born with birth defect in his right leg, which has 4 toes and is growing at a slower pace than the left one.  Doctors everywhere have told us horror stories of what my son will have to go through in his life. We heard this for years, until we moved here. My son's doctor suggested we apply to Shriners Hospital for my son and maybe they could come up with something more encouraging...and they gave my wife and me hope for our son's future. The doctors will be watching his leg lengths over the next 3 years as they get him set up with shoe lifts to get his legs and hips even.

Circus's get kids excited and guess what, the Shriners' also have their own circus, the El Karubah Shrine Circus, which is coming to the Century Link Center. This is the real deal with clowns, elephants, tigers, high wire and trapeze acts.

Just as the Shriners' Hospital for Children is celebrating a milestone, so is the El Karubah Shrine Circus...49 years!!!
