Former Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot and killed Saturday night after a a minor traffic mishap escalated into a road rage murder.

While driving with his wife in the Crescent City's Garden District, Smith's car was rear ended by the vehicle behind him, causing him to hit the auto in front. Police said the driver of the vehicle that hit Smith, identified as Cardell Hayes, exchanged words with the former football player.

According to police, Hayes then drew a handgun and shot Smith several times. He  has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Smith's wife was also shot and transported to a local hospital. Her injuries are said to be non-life-threatening.

Two friends of Smith's witnessed the shooting. They have not been identified by authorities.

The 34-year-old Smith was drafted by New Orleans in 2004 and spent all nine of his NFL seasons with the team, including the Saints Super Bowl winning year of 2009. He last played in 2012.
