Go Here: El Cosmico in Marfa, TX

Ever since I saw Baz Luhrmann’s magical 1996 interpretation of ’Romeo and Juliet,’ I’ve romanticized the idea of living in a weird desert trailer park. Now that I’m a grown up, the idea of permanent residence in one is slightly less appealing, but El Cosmico is a communal outpost in the deserts of West Texas that lets you pretend for the night.

El Cosmico was opened in 2009 by Liz Lambert; she calls it “part vintage trailer, safari tent and teepee hotel and campground, part creative lab, greenhouse and amphitheatre – a community space that fosters and agitates artistic and intellectual exchange.” The project is a collaboration between Lambert, architects, and a team of artists, builders and students.

Each trailer has been restored to be comfortably accommodating, and includes a stove, refrigerator, fans, heating and hot water. El Cosmico provides everything you need to pretend you’re living in a desert trailer community, including bedding, towels, and everything you’ll need to cook — there’s probably not any delivery in the neighborhood.

Some larger trailers have their own private bathroom and kitchen facilities, but all guests have access to the bathhouse, outdoor kitchen with a fridge, grills, and picnic tables, wireless internet in the lounge, and hammock grove, which looks very, very awesome:

Rentals start as low as $110/night for the 18′ ‘Little Pinky’ trailer, and it’s a measly $40 more to stay in the 1956 ‘Imperial Mansion,’ which boasts 45′ in length and has it’s own deck a king and twin bed, for groups.

On a strict travel budget? For $80/night you can sleep in a 22′ teepee, and $65/night gets you a 120 sq.ft. safari tent (below) with wood floors, a queen bed, electricity and weatherproof walls. It’s just $12/night to camp on site, if you bring your own tent.
