Two Baton Rouge Police officers and a East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office deputy are dead following a Sunday morning shooting on Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway.

Three other officers have been wounded, one of them is in critical condition. One suspected shooter is dead, but police believe two others are on the run. Mayor Kip Holden says this "was an ambush".

The gunman has been identified as 29-year-old Gavin Eugene Long who was killed by police.

Police detained two suspects in Addis and transported them back to the BRPD Violent Crimes Unit. Witnesses reported seeing the men at the Port Allen Walmart where they apparently were changing out of all black clothing before they were taken into custody. They're being questioned in relation to the deadly shooting.
Governor John Bel Edwards released this statement:

This is an unspeakable and unjustified attack on all of us at a time when we need unity and healing. Rest assured, every resource available to the State of Louisiana will be used to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice. For now, I’m asking all Louisianans to join Donna and me in praying for the officers who were involved and their families as the details continue to unfold.
