Graduation Gifts: What Is The Appropriate Gift? [POLL]

Oh Graduation time! It's the milestone that all kids dream about. But as family and friends, it's time to start going to the ATM, writing checks or going shopping. What is the appropriate gift for graduates these days?

In my opinion, gifting to a graduate depends on a few things...what you can afford and your relationship to the graduate. If you decide to go with cash or check, how much is the appropriate amount? And what about gift cards? To where and how much? And then there's actual gifts, the ones you have to go shopping for...what to get?

I do know that when I graduated from high school and college, the cash definitely came in handy. So, I guess that's the question...What is the appropriate gift?
