Has Angelina Jolie Given Women False Hope for Beating Breast Cancer?

Not everyone is applauding Angelina Jolie’s decision to undergo a double mastectomy.

The Oscar-winning actress made headlines last week when she revealed she had the procedure because she has “a ‘faulty’ gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.”

While public opinion has supported Jolie’s decision, there are some people who don’t agree with her. Debbie Gentile-Abbood, a 51-year-old kindergarten teacher from New Jersey, said Jolie does not exactly represent most women:

“That’s good for her; she’s got the best health care and she’s got money. She doesn’t have to worry about taking off of work. She doesn’t have to worry about taking care of her family, cooking or cleaning — the things that the normal woman would have to do.”

Gentile-Abbood, who is the same age as her mother when she died from breast cancer, worries that she is was ever diagnosed because odds are against any insurance company covering reconstructive surgery. That’s why she’s against getting tested, adding, “If I found out, I couldn’t take care of the situation. What am I supposed to do? Sit around every day and worry that I’m going to get cancer?”
