A Shreveport man is behind bars after being found with a small cache of high-powered firearms.

Police say just before 3 p.m. on September 4, officers were called out to the 3600 block of West College Street to a report of an armed person. The man was seen walking up and down the street, carrying what appeared to be two assault rifles.

Officers found 39-year-old Deangelo Thomas and when he saw the officers, he placed two semi-automatic rifles and a handgun on the ground. Police also loacted an additional semi-automatic handgun stored in Thomas' waistband.

The four weapons were an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, AK-47 semi-automatic rifle, .40-caliber and 9mm semi-automatic pistols. Thomas also had high-capacity magazines for the rifles. One of the handguns was found to have been stolen in a vehicle burglary.

Further investigation revealed Thomas had a prior felony conviction, which means it's unlawful for him to possess any firearms. Thomas also told authorities he had shot and killed a person earlier that afternoon at an address outside Caddo Parish. However, investigators weren't able to confirm that statement.

Thomas is charged with illegal possession of a stolen firearm and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He was booked into the Shreveport City Jail.
