If you're from Louisiana, you probably don't have much experience driving on icy roads.

This morning, I saw a ton of Facebook updates about people sliding into intersections, ditches—and in some cases—other cars. We simply aren't built for this the same way that someone in Montana isn't built for a Category 5 hurricane.

There are a few simple steps that can help you avoid disaster if you find yourself sliding around in traffic during this icy weather.

  1. Don't hit the brakes: This is what makes the slide happen in the first place and also what makes existing slides even worse.
  2. Turn gently into the slide: Master Trooper Brooks David has actually said that in icy conditions it is better to actually hold your wheel straight. If you can't keep your vehicle straight and you find yourself sliding, be sure to gently turn your wheels in the direction the back of your vehicle is sliding. Most people tend to overdo this, which brings us to the final point.
  3. Don't freak out: Panic and overcorrecting can cause your vehicle to spin out of control.

Another general rule is to actually do as little as possible and allow your car to pass over the ice. Don't hit your brakes, and try to keep the steering wheel straight. Another way to avoid sliding is to avoid driving altogether. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

Feeling your vehicle slip out of your control is scary as hell, but hopefully these tips will help you out.
