12/5/14 5:59 p.m.: The family of Alec Dye has confirmed that the human remains found in Guam belong to the BAFB airman who had been missing since Monday.

This is an update to a previous story, which appears below:

Andersen Air Base Security Forces patrols have discovered unidentified human remains in Guam near where a deployed airman from Barksdale Air Force Base went missing Monday, December 1.

Airman Alec Dye was last seen near Tarague Beach. The 24-year-old from Mooresville, Indiana, was in Guam supporting the continuous bomber presence mission, and assigned as a B-52H Stratofortress Crew Chief.

"This finding is significant, but the search for Airman Dye continues," said 2nd Bomb Wing Commander Col. Kristin Goodwin in a Barksdale news release. "He is a member of our family and not a moment goes by that we aren't looking, searching and hoping that we find Alec."

The news release states that Airman Dye's squadron commander and U.S. Air Force officials have remained in daily contact with Alec's family throughout the search. Counseling has also been offered to Barksdale airmen through the chaplain corps.
