UPDATE: Inmate Captured After Escaping Custody At Shreveport Hospital

UPDATE 8:30 p.m. SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Police have captured an inmate who fled while being guarded at University Health hospital in Shreveport.

KSLA-TV reports 25-year-old Byron Hardy of Shreveport was found about 5:30 p.m. Saturday inside a vacant apartment.

Shreveport police Cpl. Marcus Hines says Hardy was bitten by a police canine in the process of being apprehended.

Hardy was at the hospital for treatment of an undisclosed medical condition when he fled just after 1 p.m. Saturday. Hardy had been held at the Shreveport City Jail since Jan. 26 on felony charges of home invasion, burglary of an inhabited dwelling and domestic abuse battery.

Hines says Hardy has been booked into the city jail on an additional charge of escape. It isn't immediately clear if he has an attorney.

KTBS-TV reports police were called to the facility just after 1 p.m. Saturday.

The inmate, identified as 25-year-old Byron Hardy of Shreveport, was at the hospital for an undetermined matter. Hardy had been held at the city jail on felony charges of home invasion, burglary of an inhabited dwelling and domestic abuse battery.

Hardy was last seen running eastbound on Kings Highway toward Samford Street. He's described as a black male, about 5-feet-9 to 5-feet-10 inches tall and weighs about 150 pounds. He has several tattoos on his chest and arms and surgical scars along his mid-section.
