The Isolation Tank [sometimes known as a flotation tank] is a unique form of therapy in which you’re floating nude for about an hour in a large container or pool filled with salt water. Most tanks use Epsom salt, which is what allows the subject to float. Think of it like the Dead Sea sans the religious mumbo jumbo.

Sure it might be a bit strange at first; walking into a spa, stripping down to nothing and just being in your own head for an hour, but we assure you the experience is quite an interesting one.

We should warn you, some of these establishments operate out of the owner’s own apartment. Regardless, let’s see why you SHOULD check it out.

1. It’s Relaxing

You bet it is. Imagine being completely in tune with everything that is happening in and around your body. Hearing every breath you take while being in the best rest of your life. Who wouldn’t want that?

2. Celebrities Use Them

In America we have a firm rule that if celebrities do something then it’s cool. I think that’s a good rule, right? I’m not sure—E! News told me it was. Anyway, famed comedians such as Joe Rogan and George Carlin have been known to use them. George Carlin’s experience was pre-death obviously. Head onto YouTube and you’ll find a few videos of Rogan explaining his experiences in the tank.

3. Salt Water Is Good For The Skin

If you’ve ever wished to have the perfectly flawless skin offered by Photoshop then here’s you’re chance! Salt water is proven to leave your skin feeling smooth and rejuvenated. It also helps with acne and eczema.

4. Say Goodbye To Stress & Anxiety

If you’re a human being in the United States then you’ve got stress and anxiety. Sadly it’s true. So why not try and combat them by doing nothing. It’s amazing what one hour in this tank can do. Your fears, anxieties and worries all seem to somehow drift away so that you can experience something nearly unexplainable.

5. The Calming Effect

Unless you’re claustrophobic, this tank produces an immensely calming sensation. Maybe it’s the salt. Maybe it’s the perfectly heated water to your skin temperature. But whatever it is, the hour you spend inside the tank will give you the sensation of flying in your own dream. Sounds cool, no?

6. Weight Loss

Maybe not in the same way as a diet does, but what this experience does is makes you more open and motivated to do the job. The tank is known to produce changes in you so that there is clarity of thought, motivation and memory. Your mind is open. Scientists believe that the experience has a positive influence on the production of endorphins, which makes it easier to get over addictions.

7. Increased Productivity

It’s almost as if you are reborn inside that tank. Your mind is completely clear and ready to work on whatever it is that is important to you. Whether it be work, family or even yourself, the tank give you the necessary state of mind to pursue what you want.

8. It Sparks Creativity

The tank has been known to make the left and right brain more active, causing an immense increase in creativity.

9. It’s An Out of Body Experience

Many have experienced the equivalent of hallucinogenic trips, almost as if they’d consumed shrooms beforehand. Some others equate it to the deepest sleep you’ll ever have. And some even believe that they’ve spoken with God inside the tank. I guess the point is that everybody has a different experience when they’re inside, but nearly everybody has an out of body experience of some sort—it just seems to be different per subject.

10. If Nothing Else, It’s A Great Story

Maybe you’ll like it. Maybe you won’t. But hey, at least you know that later that night if you meet up with your friends, the answer to the question “how was your day,” will be much more interesting!
