Yes, nothing ever ends. How appropriate that Doctor Manhattan said that in the final pages of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ WatchmenThe series ended, but DC Comics has continued its story in many ways through the years (often against Moore’s wishes). A few years ago, they released a Before Watchmen series; the Watchmen characters are currently appearing with DC’s iconic heroes in a series called Doomsday Clock. And Damon Lindelof is developing a continuation of Watchmen of his own, in the form of a new HBO series set years after the events of the comic books, and the movie adaptation directed by Zack Snyder.

A lot of the cast of this show has been announced, but their roles are mostly still unknown. /Film now reports, though, that Jeremy Irons will play “none other than the older version of Adrian Veidt, aka Ozymandias, a key character from the original Watchmen comic series.” They also note that Jean Smart has joined the show as “a mysterious FBI agent.”

The thought of more Watchmen stuff might drive Alan Moore to write a rambling, angry journal he can then send to a disreputable New York tabloid, but I like this idea a lot more than a simple rehash of the old Watchmen story. There’s plenty of deranged stuff going on in the world for a new Watchmen to draw on and create parallels with. Lindelof’s Watchmen is set to premiere on HBO in 2019.
