As Star Wars Rebels ends, Disney is taking the TV franchise lightyears ahead. The mind behind Disney streaming’s live-action Star Wars TV series is none other than Jon Favreau, who will write and produce.

Disney made the announcement early Thursday, albeit without specifying any real details of the live-action series eyed for 2019. Favreau has a strong Disney and Star Wars history; both directing the upcoming live-action Lion King and having voiced characters in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story. And while Star Wars adding another white male behind the camera will give many pause (on International Women’s Day, no less), Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy made sure to note that the writer-executive producer would head up a diverse staff:

I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform. Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.

Disney was said to be working on several Star Wars TV series, some of which may take place at different times of the franchise’s history. One rumor saw Disney trademarking the name Star Wars Resistance, while another places Rebels boss Dave Filoni as working on another animated series.

We’ll have more details as they emerge, but is Favreau the right choice for our first live-action Star Wars series?
