Katy Perry Squashes ‘American Idol’ Judge Rumors, Charlie Sheen Eyed for Position

A judge on ‘American Idol‘ is a gig that tireless toiler Katy Perry wants no parts of. Perry has no aversion to working hard – she worked night and day to promote her film ‘Katy Perry: Part of Me,’ which subsequently arrived to a cold box office reception. But she refused the idea of ‘Idol’ simply because it’s too much of a time commitment for her and she has other plans taking priority.

Perry did confirm that producers approached her about the gig, but she had to reject their offer.

“People have reached out to me about the possibility of being involved, and it’s not right for me yet. It’s a real commitment to be on one of those shows,” the singer told The Hollywood Reporter. Instead, she wants to focus on her own career at this point, saying, “I have ideas for two or three big, creative things, and I want to be able to fulfill those ideas.”

Now, TMZ is reporting that producer Nigel Lythgoe wants to go outside music circles for the judge’s panel for Season 12. He reportedly wants actor Charlie Sheen and singer/actor/comedian Jerry Lewis. Apparently, Fremantle, the company that produces the show, has a new boss, so anything is possible.

But Sheen and Lewis? Really? They would certainly inject the panel with a comedic edge and years of entertainment biz history. Sheen is a loose cannon who could nab viewers based on his popularity and the fact that is so unpredictable. He is a bonafide superstar with a dedicated and built-in following. Plus, his commentary will eclipse the quips of current judge Steven Tyler.

TMZ also reports that the always-entertaining Sheen said he’d be down for the gig, if certain conditions are met. First, FX, which airs his show ‘Anger Management,’ must sign off. Secondly, the salary has to be right! He said, “If the numbers move the needle and ‘Idol’ matches 20% of my weekly salary for Autism Speaks, JDRF, and the Boys and Girls Club … then the hell with it. As we say, pour the smoke.”

Essentially, that translates to: “I have to make sure it’s cool with my current gig and pay me.”

Producers reportedly still think they can bring Jennifer Lopez back for a third season, though.

This is getting good! Deciding who sits on the judge’s panel is more exciting than finding out how wins! Stay tuned, ‘Idol’ watchers…
