Louisiana Jockeys Arrested in Horse Race-fixing Scheme

Three Louisiana jockeys have been arrested following an extensive investigation by the Louisiana State Police Gaming Enforcement Division.

Troopers have charged 46-year-old Joseph Patin, Jr., and 51-year-old Billy Patin, both of Opelousas, and 24-year-old LeSean Conyers of Lafayette on charges of willful pulling of the reins and cheating and swindling.

A complaint received from the Louisiana Racing Commission alleged that during a race at the Evangeline Downs Race Track and Casino on June 19, the three men "engaged in questionable riding tactics that affected the outcome of the race." Troopers determined the jockeys schemed to hold back a horse picked as a favorite to win, while utilizing an agent to place unusual bets to maximize winnings.

Joseph and Billy Patin were also arrested on warrants of unnatural stimulation of horses. Evicence in two separate races on July 4 revealed the two used hand-held shocking devices on the horses while competing in races.

"Horseracing in Louisiana has been a prominent aspect of the state's sports history. The Louisiana State Racing Commission is dedicated to the maintenance of a high-quality sport and a fair playing field for its many pari-mutuel fans and an important economic industry."
