Since jail is an intentionally unpleasant place, most inmates count down the days to their release. But when one North Carolina man refused to leave the pokey, he was granted an all-expenses-paid extended stay.

Rodney Dwayne Valentine, 37, had been cooling his heels for unspecified reasons in the Rockingham County jail since May 22. When his release date rolled around on Saturday morning, he asked deputies to drive him to a nearby hotel. And after they kindly (okay, probably not so kindly) told him they weren’t a shuttle service, Valentine decided maybe he’d stick around.

Apparently he made himself a little too comfortable, because he was still on the property by that afternoon. At that point, he was charged with second-degree trespassing and sent back to the clink — or as he calls it, “home sweet home.”
