Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has died. She was the first woman to serve as British prime minister. She was 87. She was leader of Great Britain from 1979 to 1990.

She was often referred to as the "Iron Lady" for her personal and political toughness as a member of the Conservative Party. She retired from the spotlight after suffering a stroke in 2002. Thatcher had a close relationship with U.S. President Ronald Reagan during her service. Her own Conservative party brought her down in 1990 when she was forced to resign after an internal leadership struggle after she introduced a poll tax rather than a property tax.
