Michelle Williams has already portrayed the most famous woman in Hollywood, and now she might be playing one of the most iconic rock musicians.

According to a new report from Variety, the My Week With Marilyn actress is in talks to portray Janis Joplin in a new biopic from Martha Marcy May Marlene director Sean Durkin. Not to be confused with that other Amy Adams-led Joplin project that was halted last year, Durkins’ film, titled Janis, will be produced by Peter Newman (The Squid and the Whale), who’s been trying to make a biopic about the singer for 20 years, according to Vanity Fair. Newman’s long held the rights to the singer’s catalogue and writings, which will provide the basis for the film’s focus on the last six months of Joplin’s life, who died at age 27 from a drug overdose in 1970.

First off, it’s super exciting to hear about a leading project for Williams. Since portraying Marilyn Monroe in 2011, the actress has only appeared in supporting roles, though ones she always shines in. In this fall’s upcoming drama Manchester By the Sea, Williams gives one of her most heart-wrenching performances yet despite her little screen time. A biopic like Janis could be a fantastic vehicle to bring William’s back to the forefront of a film.

But there’s no doubt that Williams’ isn’t the first name that comes to mind when it comes to portraying the rock musician. She’s an actress known for her more quiet and internal performances, especially considering her work with Kelly Reichardt and her turn in Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine. Honestly, Adams has always sounded like a perfect fit to play Joplin as someone who’s performances have navigated calm restraint and explosive fury so well. (My fingers are crossed that projects gets back in development.) Yet again, the Durkin biopic would give Williams a chance flex a different kind of muscle on screen, and maybe be the right project to get her the leading roles she deserves.
