Here’s something you may not know about me: it takes a tremendous amount of willpower for me to not spend the first paragraph of every Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children gushing about Eva Green. Nearly every time I write about this movie, I promise myself I’m just going to share a few thoughts about the clips and teasers that have been released so far, and instead, I hijack my own post to sing the praises of one of my favorite actors. Look, I did it again! I am not a strong man.

So yeah, this new clip from Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children explains some of the time travel elements, and yes, last week we were given a brand new featurette and the new song from the movie, but who cares? Let’s watch Eva Green work!

The clip features a conversation between Green’s Alma Peregrine and Asa Butterfield’s Jacob Portman, wherein they discuss the former’s ability to control time. While the earlier theatrical trailer hinted that the school was held in some sort of a time loop, Miss Peregrine explains in a bit more detail that what her powers enable her to do  —  in fact, her whole purpose in life  —  is to create a bubble where the other peculiar children can thrive without being afraid of the outside world. Many teachers describe the education of children as their life’s work; Miss Peregrine takes platitude rather literally.

Watching Eva Green play Alma Peregrine in a full scene (and not just a few seconds a time) really drills home how much fun this character could. It would seem that Eva Green’s read on Miss Peregrine is to play her as a sort of deranged Mary Poppins, a friendly and nurturing mother figure who is fighting a never-ending battle with losing her sanity. Just listen to her react to Jacob’s comment about her turning into a bird; there’s screaming going on in that head, and it makes Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children a really intriguing mix of adolescent fantasy and adult dread.
