For decades, American students and schools have fared poorly when compared to those in other developed nations. And now, according to a recently released study, the U.S. education system remains mediocre, getting a grade of C minus for the third straight year.

The K-12 Achievement Index, a major indicator in the recently released “Quality Counts” report by Education Weekly, provides ranks and grades for each state based on their "improvement in educational policies and practices".

According to K-12 Achievement here are, educationally, the bottom ten states.

10) Oklahoma

9) Michigan

8) South Dakota

7) South Carolina

6) Alaska
