Authorities in New York state say one of two convicts who escaped from a prison in far northern New York was fatally shot Friday afternoon after he failed to comply with orders.

Richard Matt was found in the woods after customs and border patrol agents responded by helicopter to a call about a gunshot fired at a camping trailer. The team reported smelling gunpowder near the trailer and suspected a gun had been fired. Matt was in nearby woods.

Police say Matt had a shotgun but didn't fire at them. The deadly encounter happened near the town of Malone, about 30 miles from the prison where Matt and David sweat escaped on June 6. Matt was serving 25 years to life for killing and dismembering his former boss.

Officers are now focused on about 22 square miles in an effect to apprehend Sweat. Officers are using dogs and helicopters Dogs and helicopters are being used.
