It’s time for volunteers to start signing up to participate in one of the City’s signature events: ``Paint Your Heart Out Shreveport 2012.’’

One day each year, more than 1,000 volunteers paint the homes of low-to-moderate income elderly and/or disabled citizens.  Applications are being accepted for the event scheduled to be held Saturday, May 19, 2012.  Homeowners have until Oct. 31, 2011, to sign up to have their homes painted at no charge.  Approved applicants must be 62 years or older and meet the income criteria. Houses must be located within the City limits.

The 2012 event marks the 20th anniversary of PYHOS.  The goal for 2012 is to paint 50 houses.  This past spring, 39 houses were painted.  In addition to painting, homeowners receive smoke alarms, deadbolt locks and other cosmetic services.

If you or your organization would like to volunteer to paint a house or become a sponsor, please contact the Department of Community Development’s Bureau of Housing & Development at (318) 673-7503; or Marcia Nelson, program coordinator at (318) 673-7528.
