I didn’t get to review Personal Shopper out of the Toronto Film Festival, so here’s the short short version: I liked it!

Quite a bit, actually; Kristen Stewart gives an outstanding performance as an American in Paris, who’s desperate to make contact with a ghost, and specifically the ghost of her dead twin brother. To fund her quest, Stewart also works as the personal shopper for a fashion icon and socialite. It’s an unusual mix of elements, but a deeply engrossing one, with Stewart nodding at her celebrity status (and perhaps the loneliness of a certain kind of isolating fame) in interesting ways.

She also spends long stretches of the movie as the only human character onscreen; her most frequent co-star in Personal Shopper is her iPhone, and the movie’s interest in text messages and modern communication is one of its best elements. Here’s the official synopsis:

Olivier Assayas, the internationally-acclaimed director of Clouds of Sils Maria and Summer Hours, returns with this ethereal and mysterious ghost story starring Kristen Stewart as a high-fashion personal shopper to the stars who is also a spiritual medium. Grieving the recent death of her twin brother, she haunts his Paris home, determined to make contact with him.

Assayas and Stewart previously collaborated on Clouds of Sils Maria, a slightly more conventional film than Personal Shopper, although they’re both about ideas like fame, communication, and isolation. If you’re a fan of Stewart’s or Assayas’ this is one to put on your upcoming release calendar. Personal Shopper opens in theaters on March 10, 2017.
