Ratings for ‘American Idol‘ may have been down this season, but fans of winner Phillip Phillips helped the 21-year-old score one of the biggest digital sales weeks of any contestant in the show’s history. Phillips sold 278,000 copies of ‘Home’ last week, helping the coronation song land at No. 2 on the Digital Songs chart and No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

That sales total is the second-biggest digital week for any ‘Idol’ alum, trailing only the 280,000 downloads of Kelly Clarkson‘s ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ in 2009. Among ‘Idol’ coronation songs, ‘Home’ now owns the download record, eclipsing David Cook‘s ‘The Time of My Life,’ which sold 236,000.

Billboard notes that Clay Aiken did have a bigger sales week before digital downloads became the default format. Aiken sold 393,000 CD singles of ‘This is the Night’ back in 2003 after finishing as runner-up to Ruben Studdard.

Even though Phillips admitted ‘Home’ isn’t necessarily his preferred musical style, saying, “It’s a good song, but it’s not something I would write,” the ‘Idol’ judges loved the track when he performed it on the show, backed up by a marching band. Jennifer Lopez commented, “That was a Phillip song and there is nothing on the radio that sounds like that!” Randy Jackson said, “I love the song, I love the production. Everything about that was perfect.”
