Tonight on ‘American Idol,’ Phillip Phillips lived out a dream and performed on the stage with his brother, who Phillips acknowledged on the show, has “taught me so much about music.” The two blended folk and electric guitar to straight up nail Genesis’ ‘That’s All’ like nobody’s business.

Phillips took his subtle country sound and gave the tough indictment of the song an endearing vulnerability. But, to his credit, the song lost none of its juicy edge. And, based on the reaction of the audience and the judges, he couldn’t have done a better job.

Steven Tyler opened the judges’ comments by commending Phillips for his individuality. He said, “You just love being who you are. And that’s making you great every time I hear you.” J. Lo continued the glowing reviews by congratulating him for getting out of his comfort zone. She said she wasn’t sure about how he was going to do at first, but then said, “You brought it home and you were the Phillip that we love.”

Randy Jackson gave props to Phillips and his brother, and then to his mentor for the evening, Tony Kanal, for suggesting he not play his guitar during the bridge. Phillips took that direction from Kanal and added a level of intimacy to the song it would not have otherwise had. Jackson declared that choice “brilliant.”

To end Phillips’ time, his brother said “I couldn’t be more proud of him. We all root for him back home.”
