There are no shortage of opportunities to golf in Shreveport and Bossier City, but the inaugural Pot of Gold Golf Tournament is one you don't want to miss! The four-man scramble will end a Pot of Gold weekend of fundraisers for University Elementary, all supporting the school's efforts to make sure each student has state-of-the-art technology to prepare them for the jobs of the future.

No need to have the Luck of the Irish to win big (although you definitely can wear green on the greens), as the Pot of Gold tourney is a four-man scramble with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Monday, March 18. Here are five other reasons to sign your team up today:

1) NFL players Billy Jo Tolliver and Morris Claiborne will be in attendance. Tolliver spent 12 seasons with the National Football League and the Canadian Football League, including the Atlanta Falcons, Houston Oilers, Shreveport Pirates and New Orleans Saints. Meanwhile, Claiborne is a cornerback for the New York Jets.

2) A million-dollar hole-in-one shootout sponsored by Marketplace Chevrolet Buick. And that's just one of the fun prizes and raffles offered by sponsors. (Additional sponsorship opportunities still are available.)

3) You can play on the beautiful Southern Trace Country Club. The 18-hole course encompasses "celestial pine valleys, open meadows and a majestic oak forest," which inspired the renowned designer Arthur Hills to declare it "one of the most beautiful natural settings with which he has ever worked," according to Southern Trace Country Club's website.

4) There's an early bird discount. Registration is $75 per person until March 1. After that, it's $125 per person.

5) You'll be supporting the area's largest public elementary school. With 1,000 students pre-K through 5th grade, University Elementary relies on fundraisers and businesses because it doesn't receive additional Title 1 funding. The school has a partnership with Discovery Education that gives teachers with cutting edge professional development, and the school is the only one in the area to offer a pre-engineering program. Students also benefit from clubs including golf, running, archery, coding and crafting.

"Our vision is to prepare our learners for jobs of the future, which will include pre-engineering, coding, and STEAM-rich employment opportunities," said Principal Kasie Mainiero. "We believe this can only be possible with state-of-the-art technology for every student. We cannot get this without help."

University Elementary Career Week

University Elementary School will host two other fundraisers during the Pot of Gold weekend:

  • The Pot of Gold 5K will be from 8-11 a.m. Saturday, March 16, with participants walking or running from Town South Pool to University Elementary School, where there will be a party on the playground afterward.
  • The Pot of Gold silent auction party for adults only from 6 to 10 p.m. March 16 at Country Tavern.
