Cameras are everywhere these days and now you will get a little warning before you can be subjected to fines because of red light cameras.
A new law is now on the books in Louisiana to require warning signs before you approach an intersection that has such a camera.

New Orleans Sen. Troy Carter says if a city wants to have red light cameras, that's fine, but motorists should be warned if one is up ahead.

"If it's about public safety and those who push for the cameras really care about safety, then they should be fine with posting signs," said Carter.

Carter tells the Louisiana Radio Network under this law, if a sign is not posted then motorists have the opportunity to challenge a ticket and go to court to have it ruled inadmissible.

He has felt the red light cameras are somewhat of a money grab, but if those in support truly have the best interest of drivers in mind - then they should have no problem with this law.

"Public safety should trump revenue enhancement," said Carter. "As we look at measures for making the roads safer, it shouldn't be about making money or enriching budget."

Communities that don't comply with the new law will not be able to pursue fines on motorists using pictures taken by these cameras.

"We don't want to trick people and continue to collect fines," said Carter. "If a person unilaterally decides to disobey the law, then so be it they pay for a ticket."
