Former KTBS Meteorologist Rhonda Lee took her case to the airwaves this morning. Lee chatted with Erin McCarty about her Facebook-inspired firing, the national attention her story has attracted and her plans for the future.

Lee was fired on November 28 after she replied to viewer posts on the KTBS Facebook page. Since then, she has fielded calls and emails from all over the country about her situation. And it all started over a Facebook post criticizing her hair style.

Lee said she had asked her bosses to implement a policy to “block these kinds of more offensive posts on the station’s Facebook page.”

KTBS released this statement defending their termination of Lee:

On November 28, 2012, KTBS dismissed two employees for repeated violation of the station’s written procedure. We can confirm that Rhonda Lee was one of the employees. Another employee was a white male reporter who was an eight year veteran of the station. The policy they violated provided a specific procedure for responding to viewer comments on the official KTBS Facebook page. Included is an email that was sent to all news department employees informing them of this procedure.

Lee, however, argues that no such procedure was ever actually implemented by KTBS.

“A memo KTBS is circulating was simply a list of suggestions and not a directive,” Lee said. “I wish there had been a directive. Because had there been a directive, there would have been something more concrete for me to stand on.”

Lee has hired an attorney and told us she’s in discussions about possible litigation against KTBS.
