The wait  for shoppers seeking an easier way to maneuver between Sam’s Club and Target on Youree Drive ends Thursday with the opening of the much-anticipated crossover connecting the megastores.

Mayor Cedric Glover will host a formal opening at 10 a.m. Thursday, November 3, at the site long known for generating headaches for motorists and pedestrians alike.

``This is a major improvement for this area and will provide immediate relief in terms of easing traffic congestion not only for those shopping at Sam’s and Target but also for other shoppers moving along this busy corridor,’’ Mayor Glover said.

In April, the City Council approved a deal for the City to accept property and funds from Sam’s East, Inc., Target Corp., and RBL University IV, V and VI, for construction of a crossover to make pedestrian and vehicular access between the retail developments easier and safer.

That agreement called for the City to pay approximately 25 percent of the estimated $40,000 construction cost. The remaining expense was paid by Sam’s East, Inc., and the developer of University Place.
