Second Round of National Drug Take-Back Day Set for Sept. 27

Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington says residents can turn in their unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications for safe disposal at the Viking Drive Substation at 2510 Viking Drive in Bossier City on Saturday, September 27, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The National Take-Back Initiative is part of the one-day collaborative effort with the Drug Enforcement Administration in which law enforcement agencies locally and around the country will collect unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for disposal.

Deputies will accept prescription (controlled and non-controlled) and over-the-counter medications. The program is anonymous, and you can dispose of the medications and take the identifying information label with you. Intra-venous solutions, injectables and syringes will not be accepted.

According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose and abuse. The non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America. The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends…and the home medicine cabinet.

Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold. Unused drugs that are flushed contaminate the water supply, and proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment.
