Louisiana minimum wage could be could going from $7.25 to $8.00 an hour.

According to Louisiana Radio Network, the Senate Labor Committee is set to hear a proposal today that would increase minimum wage in Louisiana, beginning next year. It would also propose that minimum wage be raised to $8.50 in the year 2018.

But according to State Director for the National Federation of Independent Business, Dawn Starns, businesses are already paying what they can afford and the increase "will not get anyone out of poverty."

Governor John Bel Edwards and Louisiana Budget Project director, Jan Moller, on the other hand, are all for the raise. Moller says,

“The reason Louisiana has such a high problem with poverty and so many poor people is because there are hundreds of thousands of families in our state where people work hard and just don’t make enough to make ends meet. “An hour of work in today’s society, in 2016, ought to be worth more than $7.25”

What are your thoughts? Would the increase in minimum wage make a difference for a lot of people or not?
