It’s taken some time to get off the ground, but at last Netflix’s take on Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events has gone before cameras. With it, prying eyes have obtained our first look at Neil Patrick Harris made up as the dastardly Count Olaf, along with a number of other freakish-looking favorites.

Vancity Buzz caught the first look at the erstwhile How I Met Your Mother star made up in the iconic role, filmed in Vancouver obtaining one of his many disguises and flanked by a number of of other curious-looking characters. It’s a bit heavier on the forehead than Jim Carrey’s 2004 take, but recognizably Olaf all the same:

In addition to Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snicket and Aasif Mandvi as Uncle Monty, Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events also features Supergirl star Malina Weissman in the role of eldest child Violet Baudelaire, joined by newcomer Louis Hynes as Klaus.

So reads Netflix’s official synopsis for the series:

A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tale of the orphaned children Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire at the hands of the villainous Count Olaf, as they face trials and tribulations, misfortunes, and an evil uncle in search of their fortune, all in their quest to uncover the secret of their parents’ death. The books have sold more than 65 million copies and have been translated into 43 languages. The epic series will be executive produced by Barry Sonnenfeld, who will also direct a number of episodes, and Daniel Handler, legal, literary and social representative for Lemony Snicket.

As developed by Paramount TV and novel series author Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket is a pen name), Netflix’s new live-action adaptation will be directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. Apart from Jim Carrey’s somewhat unsuccessful 2004 take on the material, the Series of Unfortunate Events novels have sold countless copies and spawned a great deal of merchandise, from board games to albums.

Netflix might release more official glimpses of A Series of Unfortunate Events in the coming weeks, but check out the original movie trailer below.
